Is it worth buying an iPhone from Airtel or Vodafone?

The answer is certainly not.

How else can one get an iPhone 3G in India?
Its available in most of the local mobile stores for about 15k -17k. So, go and get one from there. Thousands of people are already using unlocked iPhone in India and it works well.

If it was priced anywhere between 12k to 15k by Airtel and Vodafone I would have certainly thought about buying one from them but not for 31k.

iPhone launch in India, when will my wait be over?

It's been more than a year that I have been following iPhone news, discussions and launch dates in India and it does't seems to be over sometime soon. According to the latest stories circulating around in the blogsphere and print media, it should finally launch on 22nd Aug 2008 by Airtel in India. I called Airtel customer support to enquire about it but they dont have any reliable information about it yet. All they have to say is please login to airtel.in/iphone3g and submit your request.
After reading the article "Best iPHone applications" on Technology Nerd blog, the wait is becoming even more difficult.
Anyways I am going to wait till 22nd and see the deals available if at all iPhone launches, otherwise I am going to go and get it the "evil way".

Valentine's Day, Speed dating, Love, Friendship and Relationships...

Valentine's Day, Speed dating, Love, Friendship and Relationships...

The Valentine's Day is gone but I just read this story today and its worh a read. Here it goes :

Hey you!

Happy Valentine's Day! Are you guys ready for it? I hope ya have all the cards, chocolates and roses ready. If you're out of ideas, you can get tulips too. Just showing up with a bouquet of flowers--especially red tulips would cheer up her heart...

Cheer Up!

I was really depressed last week after talking to Jeffrey about his Valentine's Day surprise to Kate. I was reminiscing about Aaliyah when Megan called to help her with the computer. I guess I was looking really depressed and more quiet than normal, so she asked me what the matter was. I told her about how I used to plan stuff for Aaliyah too and how I really miss her. Megan looked helpless. We talked about my date with the redhead and how it went so horribly wrong. Sometimes I think I'm the one who's doing all the wrong moves. Maybe I'm just oblivious to things or I lost my mojo or whatever I had. Maybe Aaliyah loved me so much that she tolerated all my shortcomings until she couldn't take it anymore.

Continue reading.......

"Look Bob, you need to relax and just have fun for a while," said Megan, "Maybe having a relationship right now for you is not the best thing. Why don't you date for a while and see the options out there for you? I'm sure something will work out. I mean, you're a great guy." She really tried her best to change my mood. "I don't think there's anyone out there for me Megan, I mean, she's gone and I don't think I'll be getting her back," I told her.

Then Megan said, "I'll tell ya what, I'll make a pact with you. If you're not married by the age of 35 and I'm not married, why don't we just marry each other?" I was stunned. Speechless. This is Megan we're talking about, folks. Someone I've known all my life--someone I've never expected in a million years would 'propose' to me. "Um... okay... since we're really great friends, I guess we can work something out like that."

There you have it folks, at least someone's out there for me. I'm not going to die alone, old and decrepit. I thought it was really sweet of her to say something like that. We made a pact and shook hands on it. Just like when we used to shake hands when we were kids back in Cali. It cheered me up a lot, that's for sure!

Heart To Heart Day [Feb 14]
Megan and I wanted a little adventure so we decided to go to a speed dating place--and boy, it was weird! Most people whizzed past me because they were mundane and generic. Questions like "What's your sign? Do you have pets? Do you have children?" et cetera, et cetera... were asked almost on every round. I mean who would really pour their heart out to total complete strangers in the span of five minutes, right? I kept checking on Megan and she kept her eye contact with me. We were motioning each other and wondering "What did we land ourselves into now?"

Then there was this woman. She was really pretty. I mean she had the right height, great hair, nice eyes--the works, you know. But when she opened her mouth, everything came out. I learned more about her life history than I ever really wanted to know. She literally poured out everything she discusses with her therapist in five minutes flat! Did someone forget to send me the email on the fact that people are speed dating to skip therapy?

For the ladies out there, let me give you a piece of advice--don't pour your heart out on a first date! Give the poor guy a break. I was on the receiving end of whatever bottled up stuff she was working on, and well, it was very, very uncomfortable! She started crying and telling me about how it's so hard to find a decent man these days... I mean, I promise you--that was the longest five minutes of my life! And I do want them back.

Don't lose hope on me just yet, because as soon as I came out the door, I saw the hostess that was running the tables. She thought I had a funny reaction to people I met that night. So I struck up a conversation and asked her out. You think she can do better?

Thanks For A Great Valentine's Day [Feb 15]
I have to thank the ladies for a great Valentine today. This morning I walked in the door and all of them surprised me with the biggest Valentine I've ever seen! I mean, it was humongous! Everyone signed it just to cheer me up. I think the main organizer was Donna. I bet she got the message from my newsletter about the baby shower. Maybe she heard from Megan about how down I was.

Well, whatever it was, I'm not complaining. It was really nice of them to cheer me up and have some fun around the office. I might not have a significant O but hey, I have all these lovely ladies cheering me up. And I'm totally open for the market! I guess it all depends on your outlook. If you're down and depressed this VDay season, DON'T BE! Just because you don't have someone doesn't mean you don't have friends. They're good for all seasons, and not just a day in the year. Besides, Valentine's Day is overrated. So, pick yourself by the bootstraps and thank your friends for being there for you through thick and thin. Stop focusing on yourself and start appreciating what you have--well, that's what I'm telling myself anyway.

Saying I Love You
Saying "I love you," is more than just those three little words. It's your whole being, your actions that really count. You didn't think I forgot to tell you about Kate and Jeffrey's romantic weekend did ya? I'm saving the best for last, ha ha! Jokes apart, what Jeffrey proposed to Kate was really, really romantic. You have to know the whole story. First off, he called her and told her that he was sick. Our Kate of course went nuts. She wanted to get chicken soup for the fellow, she wanted to be there and care for him and so on... So she rushed to his place, and what did she find?

Rose petals! Ya, you read it right, a trail of rose petals that went from the door to the dining room. The whole place was lit with candles. "Warm, glowing, orange candlelight," according to her. Kate had this weird glow and a grin on her face when she told us all about it at our Monday catch-up dinner. The chef Jeffrey, maestro of love, was ready with dinner. I mean this guy must've read every book on how to keep a lady happy. He can play music, he can cook, AND he has all the right moves! I'm thinking of taking classes from him! So they had their dinner and he told her that he's really head over heels for her and that he really, really loved her. "I don't know about you, but I want to be exclusive with you," the real love doctor explained, "if you need time to think about it I understand. I'm just letting my feelings be known now, so that we're clear." Of course our Kate was breathless.

What did she answer back? Stay tuned for next week's edition of the Kate-Jeffrey love saga!

Until then, here's a moment of Zen to keep you busy, there's an old proverb my granddad used to say, "People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime." I'm really glad for Kate. It reminds me of the early days when Aaliyah and I used to date. I was as crazy as Jeffrey then, I still am...

Do you enjoy my newsletters? Recommend them to a friend. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Peace and love,
Bob

Latest top music hits and how and where to find them....

What do do when you get bored of your music collection or feel that you are missing on the latest top music? This happens to me quite often and I really waste a lot of time digging here and there in search of something good. Lately I found this trick(maybe its dumb but it's good enough for my need ;)) that works:
-Once in a while or whenever I feel the need I do a google search for "top hit music of the month" .
-Scan through the result and pick one that looks good to you, once you go through it you will get an idea about what's good and what's not.
-Thats all, you have the list of the top latest music hits that you can source from wherever you want.
-I found this one really easy to use site www.musicdumper.com that comes up with almost everything and gives an option to listen online or download for free but I would always suggest to buy the original music. Original is legal and it gives the best quality you expect.

Here is the list of top 40 hit music I found recently on worldspace. As it was updated on Jan 9th it is still not the latest but the list contains almost all the HITS.

40 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake/Timbaland – “Ayo Technology”

38 Plain White T’s – “Hey There Delilah”
37 Pink – “Who Knew”

Heroku for RAILS, everything you ever wanted

It feels like sitting on top of the web with Heroku (www.heroku.com). Everything I ever wanted that would ease my pain of developing and deploying my RAILs app is all built in here.
After you get on to Heroku, all your nightmares of developing a RAIL application on a local box, choice of IDE for development, portability to the hosting server and the scary thoughts of failed deployment will all disappear.

Lets talk about a few features that got me so excited about Heroku:
-Your application is live on the internet from the moment you create it or import it from somewhere else.(off course you have the option to keep it completely private, share with a few you want to or go it publicly open to everyone)
-With full Ruby environment you will never have anything missing, every ruby you want to run will run on Heroku.
-An awesome, inbuilt development environment. You wont need anything else ever.
-Rails console, if you want it to do those console things that you would generally do when you are developing on your local box.
-Whole development stack is integrated, database server, app server cluster, load balancer, web server. Its all there.
-Gems and Plugins, no restrictions here, use the existing Gems and Plugins with a click or upload your's own.
-Amazon's EC2, your application will never be out of resources, power of Amazon's EC2 cloud is built in the base.
-and many more.......

visit www.heroku.com and start building your dream startup application. It's time to say goodbye to all the excuses you always had ;)

Watch this, do whatever it takes

What would you say to the world if you knew that this is the last chance that you have got to share everything that you want the world to know. If you knew that you have only a month or two left before you will say your final goodbye to the world. Yes, this was the last lecture of Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch and he knew that he had only a few days left of his life as he was about to die from pancreatic cancer. I don't want to try to interpret and misinterpret his words, so go ahead, watch this video and see for yourself what you can learn from it. If you can't stop those few drops of tears from your eyes, it's ok, it shows that you are still alive.

Thanks Abbas for sharing this.

Barcamp5 at Google Hyderabad, pics and little RAILS

Passionate RAILS developer Sumanth Krishna (sorry, if thats not the correct spelling) talking about RAILS and its usefulness for startups, the above picture from Barcamp5 at Google Hyderabad lists a few of Sumanth Krishna's recent favorites RAILS applications.

Ruby on RAILS in 10 points, yes thats almost all you need to know :).
Click on the "Read more" link below to have a look at a few more interesting pics and read..

Mantra of Ruby on RAILS framework, follow the convention and forget about the configuration.

This whole flow stuff looks complicated at the first glance but this makes life of a web developer so easy, everything has its own space to live in, there is no mess in RAILS unless you really want to mess it up.

If you are still lost in the sea of resources and trying to figure out where to start. The above stack of books is enough keep you busy for months. Though "Agile Web Development with Rails, second edition" is not included in the list above, I would recommend it to anyone who is still trying to figure out where to start with Ruby on RAILS. Thanks Murali for sharing this list.

For all those looking forward to get their hands dirty with RAILS, March 8th 2008 is the day. Yes you heard it right, there is a workshop on Ruby on RAILS scheduled to take place on 8th of March.

Nanda Gopal, founder and creator of www.atuitu.com and Sumanth Krishna smiling at the usual discussion going among the audience- "RAILS, django and CakePHP, which one is better??" You know the answer, don't you ;).

Who is it god for? MyBlogLog Profiles Going Dynamic

So, this email I got from yahoo, it seems their MyBlogLog service is going dynamic. It means that yahoo will start aggregating all the content that you create/generate on other services like Twitter, Last.fm, Digg, and YouTube and will display a link to those content maybe along with a small snippet and description on your MyBlogLog profile page.
Is it good?? yes for yahoo it is good they get more content for free :)
Is it good for you as a MyBlogLog user?? depends.. All these big players are finding all the possible ways to get hold of user created content and expand their internet assets.

Hello, MyBlogLoggers:

It took a long time for word to get out about our changeover to
Yahoo! IDs. Lesson learned. This time we're reaching out to you via
old-fashioned email.

In a couple weeks, we'll be launching a new feature called New with
Me. This feature will use the URLs on the Services tab of your
MyBlogLog profile to aggregate your latest activity on sites such as
Twitter, Last.fm, Digg, and YouTube. As a result, your profile page
will look different - publicly available updates from the services
you have listed will be merged with your existing information. Your
latest Flickr photos, Last.fm tracks, and YouTube videos, will all be
in one place. Updates from your contacts on MyBlogLog will be merged
and available as well. Simply put, the New with Me feature will
transform your static profile into a dynamic one.

MyBlogLog respects your privacy. We will aggregate and display only
information that is publicly available. If you're uncomfortable with
MyBlogLog aggregating and displaying publicly available information
from a particular service, you can remove that service from your
profile at any time.

Of course, we hope you're excited about the broader distribution of
everything you produce on the Web. If you use any of the sites
featured in the Services tab, you know the value of being able to
display all your activity in one place.

Your MyBlogLog profile, About Me widget, and Email Signature were the
first steps in distributing your Web identity. New with Me is the
next, pulling together a unified picture of who you are on the
distributed social Web. We have lots of cool things planned for this
feature -- I hope you'll use it to help build the next generation of
the Web.

For details, please check out our FAQ on this feature.

As always, check our blog for the latest news from us.

See you online!

Ian Kennedy
Product Manager, MyBlogLog

Make desktop clutter free, arrange desktop icons neatly - Windows XP

All of us who use computer have tons of icons on our desktop, these icons might be shortcut links, files and folders. If you haven't arranged your decktop icons for a while now, you would know how difficult it becomes to swim throgh the mess of icons on your desktop to finally find out that one icon you are looking for. Its straining for your eyes, your hand and your brains.

There are many different techniques and softwares programs that can help you keep your desktop arranged and easily accessible, the one that I came across very recently is this software named "DcolorXP", it works with your Windows XP machines and gives you a clutter free list view of all your desktop icons.

Follow these simple steps to arrange your desktop icons to make your desktop clutter free and easily accessible.

New Year 2008 SMSes

With the change in technology everything around has changed, from paper greeting cards the world moved to e-greeting cards and now its the world of SMS, no wonder this year all the new year wishes I got are all in the form of SMS. Forget about the paper card not even a single e-greeting, it was all SMS.

Life is fast and people want to do everything with the click of a (if you thought a mouse button, think again) button on their mobile.
Here is a selective list of all the creative and not so creative Happy New Year 2008 wish SMSes.

This same message came from at least 5 different persons, strange but they all live in the same place Chennai.

"A Great Jan,
a Lovely Feb,
Peaceful March,
No Worries for April,
Fun for May,
joy from June to Nov
and Happiness for Dec,
Have a wonderful and rocking 2008."

This friend of mine was 18 hours late in wishing me, so here is his creativity:
"Before 18 hrs. I have entered in ur life to make u crazy, happy, successful, rich, healthy - yes i m 2008. Happy New Year"
This one was the regular short and simple:
"Happy New Year to U nd ur family"

and this friend of mine even regrets that she is not sending any flowers or paper greetings
"No greeting card to give...
No sweet flowers to send..
No cute graphics to forward...
Just a CLEAN HEART saying...
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008"

Here is the hinglish SMS:
"Naya sal apke liye sukhad, mangalmay aur kalyankari ho. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008"

Funny:
"no tear, no fear, khao murga te piyo beer, kyon ki o my dear :) :) :) 1 din baad hai new year.
dkhi mitra di yaari, 1 din pehele hi baazi mari. HAPPY NEW YEAR"

This one has a little bit of shaayarana andaaz in it, after all its coming from a friend who used to take a lot of interest in shaayari.
"Sunhari Dhoop Har Barsat Ke Baad,
Ushi Tarah Ho Mubark Aapko Naya Saal Aaj Raat Ke Baad, Hamare badhaio ke saath.
Nav varsh laye anginat khushiyan inse kamnayon kay saath.
HNY2008"

This one had the most number of VERY:
"VERY VERY VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2008"

There is a lot of learning in this one, I dint know many facts ;)
"24hrs make a lovely day
7days make a lovely week
52weeks make a lovely year
nd knowing a person like u makes world lovely.
Wish u Happy new year"

Learning continues in this one:
"I Wish
In 2008 God gives U,
12 Months of Happiness,
52 weeks of Fun,
365 Days of Success,
8760 Hours of Good Health,
52600 Minutes of Good Luck,
3153600 Seconds of joy"

believe me my life is filled with joy every second, aftereffect of the above SMS.

Back to some English:
"May dawn of this new year, bring promises of new joys for you...
May your each day be blessed with peace, prosperity and happiness too!!.."

"Wish you a very happy and prosperous new year.
May all your dreams and ambitions be fulfilled."

"May the fragrance of joy, warmth of love and the glow of success brighten your day today and everyday. Wish you and your family a happy new year"

"Wish you a Fantastic January,
Lovable February,
Marvelous March,
Foolish April,
Enjoyable May,
Successful June,
Wonderful July,
Independent August,
Tastyest October,
Beautiful November,
Happiest December,
Have A VICTORIOUS YEAR...
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008..."

He missed September ;)

The shortest one:
"Wishing u a very Happy New Year 2008.

"WISH U ALL A VERY HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL AND PEACEFUL YEAR 2008"

A little bit of RAILS for Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications readres

This post will be of use to you only if you happen to be a newbie to Ruby and Ruby on Rails and currently working on the Shovell web application from the book "Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications" by Patrick Lenz.

This post will be helpful to you if you are trying to add a feature to the Shovell application where the users of the Shovell should be able to update/edit stories posted by them.

After completing the Shovell application as guided in the book "Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications" I wanted to add edit functionality to my stories of Shovell application and after a few hours of struggle (I am very new to Ruby and Ruby on RAILS RoR) I was successfully able to implement the edit functionality to Shovells's stories.

This is how I achieved it :)

--Display a "edit story" link next to the "Submitted by" link on the show story page.
(validation done: display the "edit story" link only if the current story being displayed is submitted by the current logged in user.)

Add this code to your /views/story/show.rhtml file within the submitted_by class

<% if logged_in? %>
<% if @story.user.login.to_s == @current_user.login.to_s %>
<span id="edit_story_link">
<%= link_to 'edit story', :controller => 'story',
:action => 'edit_story', :id => @story %>
</span>
<% end %>
<% end %>

the submitted_by class after adding this code looks like this

<p class="submitted_by">
Submitted by:
<span><%= link_to @story.user.login,
:controller => 'account',:action => 'show',
:id => @story.user.login %></span>

<% if logged_in? %>
<% if @story.user.login.to_s == @current_user.login.to_s %>
<span id="edit_story_link">
<%= link_to 'edit story', :controller => 'story',
:action => 'edit_story', :id => @story %>
</span>
<% end %>
<% end %>
</p>

--Once the user clicks on the "edit story" link, take him to /views/story/edit_story.rhtml page prefilled with all the story details and tags. Allow user to make changes and save the updates.

Create a new file named edit_story.rhtml in /views/story/ and add the following code to it.

<%= error_messages_for 'story' %>

<% form_for :story do |f| %>

<p>
Title of the story:<br />
<%= f.text_field :name %>
</p>
<p>
link:<br />
<%= f.text_field :link %>
</p>

<p>
Description:<br />
<%= f.text_area :description %>
</p>

<p>
Tags:<br />
<%= text_field_tag 'tags', @story.tag_list %>
</p>

<p>
<%= submit_tag %>
</p>
<% end %>

Add the following code to your story controller named story_controller.rb located in /controllers/story_controller.rb

def edit_story
@story = Story.find(params[:id])
@story.user = @current_user

if request.post? and @story.update_attributes(params[:story])
@story.tag_with params[:tags] if params[:tags]
flash[:notice] = 'Story was successfully updated.'
end

end

note: this controller part of the code should be added anywhere above the protected section.

All the code above looks self explanatory but in case you have a question please leave me a comment.

Other Questions that got answered by this post:
1. How to update a record in the database using form_for in Ruby on RAILS ?
2. How to use form_for to update data in database in Ruby on RAILS?
3. What method to use in the controller to update a record in the database?
4. How to fetch all the values of tags associated with a story and assign those values to a text_field_tag?

If you downloaded the word doc and the code din't work from there, try removing the extra pre tags or try the code from this post.
