Indian Schools to Get Intel Portable PCs in August

Is it really worth??? Would you call it innovation??

Read the news available at the following link and then come back to read the rest of this post: http://www.tech2.com/india/news/laptops-pcs-laptops/indian-schools-to-get-intel-portable-pcs-in-august/10391/0

Configuraton of the INR 18000 cheap and innovative portable PC:
The innovative computing device,
powered by Intel's Celeron mobile processor 900Mhz,
comes with Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity,
with a seven-inch LCD screen,
256-512 mb RAM,
flash memory of one-two gigabytes capacity,
runs on Linux and Windows XP operating systems,

Now go and read this post on one of my friend's blog:
http://nikhildev.wordpress.com/2007/05/27/my-review-of-my-hp-compaq-3228au/

Why will someone invest 18K in a useless portable PC that will become obsolete even before you buy it when one can get a high end fully loaded laptop for about 33K to 36K and not to mention it will stay good and useful for almost 5 to 7 yrs.

What do u say?

ah! after long someone has given me the pleasure of flamin em'....

bacche listen, I suggest you re-read the article again.

now you acknowledge in your post that it is a 7" portable PC as you term it useless at the same time. A computer smaller than your lunchboz is useless?

perhaps you were commenting on the memory and processor speed and that was perhaps why you make a reference to a compaq laptop that costs twice the price.

dude, they are two producs in different segments. You cant compare a 14" powerhungry heat dissipating beast to an innocent 7" wi-fi enabled device.

The former can be used to run adobe Flex, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, MS Visual Studio and Oracle 10g simultaneously in the background as you play Project IGI. The latter however is to be used in the classroom to upload notes, in class instruction, timetables and schedules, reminders, tests etc.

Also you want a school kid to carry a 3KG notebook in an already overweight bag or a 7" gameboy/PSP type lookin gadget in their hands?

what does you kid in class VI need? Photoshop or a classroom scheduler?

Now coming to the laptop, 5-7 years? well if you use it just to check your e-mail and watch a movie it will may with great difficulty cross 4 yrs. Desktops with 3.2ghz dont last for more than 3yrs and how do u expect lappies that avg around 1.8-2.0 ghz to last 7yrs?

Assuming that you want to do some good programming, dual OS, database server, application server, imaging software, video editing software, games, programming IDE etc etc. Under these circumstances my lappie is conking off already and may hit 2yrs in nov with great difficulty.

Sire, I pray ask how you arrived at that number of 5-7 yrs? was it like our new president? "Dadiji ke shareer mein baba aaye"?

Thanks Mayur for your big descriptive comment. Here is something that was originally on my mind when I thought of calling "Intel's Portable PC" invention for Indian school, useless.
I don't understand why we need to reinvent the wheel again. You know what I'm talking about :). http://laptop.org/ tells the whole story.
